"Afghanistan, which has common frontiers with the U.S.S.R., Iran and Pakistan, produces well known carpets with a typical pattern of octagons or "guls" on a red ground... Afghan carpets are the work of Nomads who migrate as far as the northern borders of Afghanistan, and because of this, the resemblance to Turkoman rugs is great. The finest Afghan carpets are of the Tekke (or Royal Bokhara) design... The warp and weft in Afghan rugs is of wool, often goat's wool, and the pile of good quality wool. The knotting is usually Senna but the Ghiordes knot is also used to some extent. Afghan rugs of recent manufacture have cotton both in the warp and the weft and a wool pile."
