"During the reign of Shah Abbas, in the 16th century, many fine Kashan carpets were made. But production was stopped for more than two centuries, from the time of the Afghan invasion in 1722 up to the end of the 19th century... Kashan carpets are made on vertical looms over a cotton foundation. Vegetable dyes are still used to some extent. The background is usually red or blue, covered with delicate sprays of leaves and flowers subtly interconnected. Typical Kashan carpets have a medallion design as the central focal point and patterned corners. Kashans without the medallion are rare and feature an overall floral design or a vase at the base containing a bouquet of flowers."
