"Woven on vertical looms, the warp and weft consist of two, or sometimes three, threads of cotton. The carpets are made of handsome lustrous wool, the Senna knotting is dense, firm and regular, and the foundation is of cotton. All these qualities combine to make Sarouk carpets the most hard-wearing of all Persian carpets. The ground is generally red or blue, or, very occasionally, cream. Usually the design is richly ornamented, often resembling that of a Kirman or Kashan carpet. The border is simple but strikingly attractive, almost always consisting of two guards framing a wider central band."
